Example School Magazine Covers

In order to understand the codes and conventions of a school magazine I have analysed a
few in order to be able to design my own.

The Castle School Thornbury

This magazine, The Castle School Contact follows clear codes and conventions for a magazine. The title takes up allot of space and is positioned at the top making it the focal point of the magazine, this helps gain the attention of the audience. Furthermore, the Mise en scene of the whole cover fits in with the intended user, families, because of it's formal layout and images showing off all what the children have been doing that term and the informal text font is appropriate for my age group, because it doesn't contain serifs on the text which makes it look older. Additionally the banner across the bottom of the page helps provide basic information, including date and further information (website address). Although, I do not like the overlapping images because part of the image gets cut off so the images are not the focal point of the cover, the title is, then the images are overlooked.

                                                              St Marys School

Although the codes and conventions are the same with this magazine, the font, colours and presentation used make a clear impression to what school it is. The elegant font makes this magazine seem much grander and gives it more identity of being a private school. This is also emphasised by the images including pictures of royalty which adds to the identity of a private school. Obviously the bottom banner is still there including the date, however the top banner is in the middle with the school cress and the colour choice is green and gold, which are very regal colours to add to the identity of a private school.

Tallulah Falls School
This is a perfect example to show the codes and conventions of a school magazine because they are clearly set out. Firstly the banners at the top and bottom display the information that is needed, school, term date and information on the included stories inside. The title is clear and bold to draw attention to the intended user and the banner colour helps to make the title stand out. The cover image is the main focal point for this magazine because it covers almost the whole page and shows off the fun that students have. The story headline starters help to lure in the audience to read in the magazine however, the Mise en scene of the cover makes it like it was made quickly and cheaply.
